Under Construction, Again…
Okay, so my rafflecopter refuses to work, so I am looking for a new platform for my give-aways. I am hoping to have that straightened out soon, quickly, asap, etc.
So as I am trying to find a theme that supports the menus I need as well as my store, and video blogs.
I am heading to the zoo today, for a much needed get-out-of-the-house-and-enjoy-the-sunshine staycation. I have a couple of new books to start tonight, with reviews to be posted shortly.
Wishing you a fantastic sunshine-filled day! Read at the beach if you are able; it does not get much better than that!
Happy Father’s Day to my Favorite Reader!
I think one of the things that makes me so happy about the relationship I have with my Dad, (and there are many), is that I can buy him books, and he does not roll his eyes at me. I buy him books for Christmas, of series that I have read, and I know he will enjoy. And since we get hard winters here in Michigan, he has a lot of time to read.
Last Christmas it was Percy Jackson. He tried to give the books back to me, but I had to explain to him that I already had all of those books. So he donated them to the library in his very small town, and the Librarian was so happy, she hugged him 🙂 Which makes me feel even more happy!
So this year it is Harry Potter. I already told him he was getting them, and that once he starts, he will not put them down.
They get snowed in; a lot; so they have weeks at a time where they know they are not getting out of their driveway. He seemed a little intimidated when I told him each successive book is longer than the last, but I know he will love them.
And then I get to look forward to the phone conversations, and the visits, and the conversations about all things books, which makes me more happy than anything!
So here’s to you Dad, and our future Harry Potter conversations. And well beyond that, Thank You for ALWAYS being my rock, my support, my ear to bend, my bail-her-out-of-whatever-jam-she-got-into.
I am truly Blessed, and love you for it!
Do You Still Read “Real” Books?
At least, that is what I was asked. I am pretty sure that they were referring to e-books versus physical books, but I did have to chuckle. I always swore I would never have an e-reader, and only read “real” books.
I also could not count the number of books; really, really good books, that I have read that were only in an electronic format. I would not have had the opportunity to read those books if I completely relied on printed books.
Now, I also still have every intention of having a library in my home when I have the spare room available for it. I could think of nothing I would enjoy more than a comfortable chair, a soft light, fluffy rug, warm fireplace, and every wall full of bookcases stacked with books. My favorite books, the classics, and books I have not read yet.

I certainly have a good start on the bookcases and books. Now I just need the room.
Where do you keep all of your books? Or have you decided to go the e-reader way to save yourself some room?
B&N Can See Me Coming From A Mile Away!
I did not realize that the sequel to Mr. Mercedes was out, so I had to go to Barnes and Noble today.
If you missed my review of Mr. Mercedes, you can catch it here: https://booksandopinions.com/2015/01/17/mr-mercedes-stephen-king/
Have you started buying your summer reading books?
I absolutely had to buy “From a Buick 8”. It is my favorite Stephen King book, hands down. I have taken it out from the library so many times it is ridiculous, and I finally bought it! I dare you to read this book and tell me you did not love it!
I also got another book by Mr. King, which I have never heard of. It is pretty small, and I am betting that I can get it read in a day. Any takers? A 9 year old girl gets lost in the woods with nothing but her walkman (yes, dated). Are you familiar with Tom Gordon? Me either. I will be reading this on Sunday.
And then as I love shopping the bargain shelves, and this is where I find my favorite books, I found this little history book, which I will be reading right away. I love history anything and everything, and I cannot wait to tell you what is in this book!
No, I Do Not JUST Read Books!
It is so much more than that. I learn things, and I share the things I learn with others.
I get to experience places and things that otherwise would be off limits to me.
I get to encourage and support new authors, when they feel like giving up, and setting their work on fire.
I get to edit books, and help authors present their best work possible.
There is no such thing as too many books, or reading too much.
If you believe there is, you will never understand what you are missing.
My Library Haul
It has been far too long since I have visited one of my local libraries. My 13 year old and I had time to burn between her doctor’s appointment and our appointment with our Pastor concerning her upcoming Confirmation.
I tend to be more likely to read the books that I get from the library, compared to reading the ones I buy and sit for many months collecting dust because I just cannot “find the time” to read them.
In the quest of looking for one particular book (my library has moved things around) I managed to find a few other books I did not know I wanted to read until I saw them. You know what I mean here, right?
I stumbled across C.S. Lewis’s “The Screwtape Letters”, which I have heard many great things about, but have never seen nor read. I managed to get about halfway through it already, and it is as good as the reviews say it is. Of course; it is C.S. Lewis. I would expect nothing less.
I also found “The Greatest Story Ever Told”, which is so old it has that orange hardcover on it with nothing but the title on the spine. You know the kind I mean: how all books were published in the 1940’s and 1950’s. I enjoy reading religious works, and this looks like it will be a fairly quick read for me. I’ve no idea if the movie of the same title is from this story (I am betting yes), so I am curious to see how much better the book is than the movie. Because the book is always better than the movie, right?
I picked up “Dead Over Heels”, by Charlaine Harris, and I may have read this one already, but flipping through it, nothing was looking too familiar so I will give it a read. This is a series about Roe (Aurora Teagarden), whom has the uncanny ability to find any dead body in close proximity of her.
I grabbed an Andrew Greeley story that I do not think I have read yet, which is shocking. He is absolutely one of my very favorite authors, so I am excited to get into this book. It is one of many in his series that centers around Blackie Ryan, a priest with a sense of humor, and great detective skills.
I am setting aside time on a daily basis to work on the many projects I have gotten supplies for, but have not taken the time to get started. I have a Zazzle and Etsy store that I am trying to get set up, and will be carrying all things book related. Except for actual books. Those you will have to get elsewhere.
I have had a very, very difficult Winter, and my Spring is not starting out too great either. I am determined to focus on “me”, and no, that is not selfish. Anyone who knows me knows the very last person I ever worry about is myself. It is a hard way to try to go through life. I may be 42 years old, but I still have hopes, and dreams, and goals I want to accomplish.
What is Keeping Me From Reading…
10) I am depressed. I live in Michigan; enough said?
9) I am homeschooling…I cannot tell you the last paragraph I read in my book, but I can tell you Newton’s 3rd law of motion.
8) I work. 45-50 hours a week.
7) I volunteer at church. You would think this isn’t a big deal, but it eats up a lot of my time (which I am grateful for!)
6) I have a 17, 13, and 10 year old daughter in my house.
5) I procrastinate. Yes, I wait for the last minute for everything.
4) I am depressed. Yes; I already said it. But I do not do good without the sunshine.
3) I do not allow time for me, and my needs.
2) I live in Michigan
1) I allow my outside things to affect my inside me.
I do not do good without sunlight. I am a horrible procrastinator. I wait for others to fix my problems. I would love to crawl into a book and that is where I stay.
Life As I Know It Is Officially Over…
…because after having 10 weeks off from college, and almost 2 more weeks to go, I will again have class starting as I continue working on my MBA.
Accounting. Accounting for Managers, to be exact. I could have cried when I opened the book. Not counting the index, and numerous appendixes, this book is 1145 pages long.
So I am pretty sure that when I say I am going to have 6 long weeks of nothing but accounting, I am probably 110% correct. I like working with numbers, and I have taken enough accounting and financial classes that I am not concerned about the work load, but I am very concerned about what kind of life I am going to have outside of working full-time, homeschooling a teenager, and a Master’s level Accounting class.
Yes, “What was I thinking is running through my brain non-stop right now!” When I disappear for awhile, do not panic 🙂
Be Still My Heart – A Sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird”
Yes, it is true. I was amazed to learn that the sequel that Harper Lee wrote was actually the first book she had written. Her agent recommended she write a backstory to Scout, and that is how we got the wonderful “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Harper said she had long believed her first story had been destroyed long ago, and never really gave it another thought. She was recently made aware by her lawyer that she found her first book. Ms. Harper has had a select few friends and family members read it, and they told her that she does indeed need to publish this book.
This new story is called “To Set a Watchman”, and revolves around Scout returning to Maycomb, Alabama to see her father, lawyer Atticus Finch.
I don’t know about you, but I will certainly stand in a line to get this book when it is released in July, if it is necessary.
What do you think about this long missing book?
